Like a crystal goblet when you've clinked it against another; not as you're toasting, but as you're carrying them out to the dinner table, crystal against crystal held upside-down. And you pray that they don't break, not before you've set them down on the table, where they won't shatter underfoot.

And you wouldn't believe it, those notes tinging around the still of the house, falling to rest over the dust on the television and the various pieces of furniture that dust tends to stick to with a vengeance, resonating for longer than you can possibly hear.

And will you tell them that you were listening to the symphony, the one you could follow as it slipped around those very same contours you gathered dust from, and it all started with your crystal.

But you know whatever you say it won't sound right, it won't make sense, it'll sound harsh and clumsy next to the music of the spheres, which you can feel, even if you can't quite hear it any longer.
